Carers Week 2020

Each year Edinburgh Carers Council hosts an event for Carers Week, usually a social gathering or a fun workshop.

This year Carers Week is from the 8th-14th of June and just because we can't all get together physically shouldn't mean we can't participate in Carers Week in a different way.

We were thinking that because we're not able to get together, and many of us aren't able to take a holiday or a respite break away from home...

Updated local guidance: Carers & PPE

There has been some updated guidance from the local government on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and how to require it if you're caring for someone and providing personal care.

These documents contain a visual guide to help you determine if you require PPE to carry out your caring role and who you should contact if you require a supply.

Please be aware there are two versions of this guidance and these are as follows:

Coronavirus – Mental Welfare Commission Advice for Carers

The Mental Welfare Commission has published new advice on the coronavirus situation for people who use mental health, learning disability and dementia services and for their family and carers.

Carers United: 1st Edition (April 2020)

We are very pleased to publish this first Carers United article, which is written and created by Caro, a carer and long term member of Edinburgh Carers Council. Many thanks to Caro for taking the time and effort to write this piece, in hopes it will inspire others during these difficult times.

Online (Facebook) Peer Support Group

We've launched a new Facebook group called 'Edinburgh Carers Council: Carers Peer Support Group'.

This has been created in order to allow us all to:

  • stay connected and keep in touch with each other

  • share thoughts, experiences and coping strategies

  • look for advice and find solutions to problems

  • generally support each other!

It will be for any carer of someone with mental health difficulties, a learning disability, autism, dementia or acquired brain injury.

At Edinburgh Carers Council we are working from current Scottish Government advice on managing our service and safe practice.

Cancelled - Carers Forum 19th March

Unfortunately, this month's Carers Forum has been cancelled due to Covid-19.

We'll keep everyone informed in regards to future developments, and in relation to our next Forum which is currently scheduled for 14th May.

Peer Support for Carers

Edinburgh Carers Council now offers peer support as well as individual and collective advocacy.

Are you an unpaid carer who would like to meet someone who understands what it's like to care for someone with mental health difficulties or dementia? If so you could meet with one of our wonderful trained volunteers on a one-to-one basis to share your experiences with each other, learn coping strategies, and receive practical and emotional support.
